Kitchen Plumbing

Plumbing

The busiest drain in the house, and it shows

Kitchen drains deal with grease, food and hot water every single day. That combination fails in ways a bathroom drain never does.

Kitchen Plumbing work performed by Merckle Plumbing in Freeport, Florida

Grease is the reason kitchen plumbing is its own discipline. It leaves the pan as a liquid, travels a short distance down the drain, cools against the pipe wall, and hardens. Every wash after that adds another thin layer. Nothing dramatic happens for a long time, and then one day the sink backs up and it feels sudden even though it has been building for years.

That is why kitchen line problems usually come back after a plunger or a store bought chemical. Those clear a channel through the middle of the buildup without touching the layer bonded to the pipe wall, so the opening closes again a few weeks later. Actually cleaning the line means cutting the grease off the wall, which is a cable or a jetting job depending on the pipe.

The rest of kitchen work is everything clustered under and around that sink. Disposals, dishwasher drain and supply, icemaker lines to the refrigerator, hot and cold shutoffs, the trap and the vent. It is a dense little bit of plumbing, and when a kitchen gets remodeled it usually all needs rethinking at once.

Things your kitchen is telling you

  • The sink drains slower each week and a plunger only helps for a few days
  • Water backs into the second bowl when the disposal or dishwasher runs
  • A persistent sour smell from the drain even after cleaning the basin
  • Gurgling from the sink when the dishwasher pumps out
  • The dishwasher leaves standing water in the bottom after a cycle
  • A damp cabinet floor, warped particleboard or a musty smell under the sink
  • The disposal hums but does not turn, or leaks from its underside

A plunger opens a channel through the grease. It does not take the grease off the pipe wall.

Why kitchen lines give out

Grease and food solids are the primary cause, and disposals make it more complicated rather than less. A disposal grinds food finer, which helps it travel, but fine particles bind readily to a greasy pipe wall and build a dense layer. Starchy and fibrous waste, potato peel, rice, pasta and celery, is particularly good at packing. What ends up in that pipe matters more than how well the disposal works.

Pipe material sets the ceiling. Older homes around DeFuniak Springs and inland Walton County often still have cast iron drain lines from the era when that was standard. Cast iron corrodes from the inside, the wall roughens, and a rough wall grabs grease far more readily than smooth plastic. Once the underside of the pipe has started rotting away, cleaning helps temporarily but a camera inspection tells us whether we are treating a clog or an aging pipe.

The third factor is venting, which people rarely think about. Every drain needs air behind the water to flow properly. If a vent is blocked or was never run correctly, the sink glugs, drains slowly and pulls water out of the trap, which is where the sewer smell comes from. Chasing a smell as if it were a clog will never solve it, so we look at the vent when the symptoms point that way.

How kitchen calls tend to go

  • Understand the pattern

Slow all the time, or only when the dishwasher runs? Both bowls or one? The pattern tells us whether we are dealing with the trap arm, the branch line or the main.

  • Look under the sink

Trap, disposal, dishwasher connections, supply shutoffs and any evidence of leaking. Plenty of kitchen calls get solved right here.

  • Clear the line properly

Cable or jetting depending on the pipe and the blockage. The goal is a clean pipe wall rather than a channel through the middle.

  • Camera it when it keeps returning

If a line has clogged repeatedly, we put a camera down it. That is how you find bottom rot in cast iron or a belly holding standing water.

  • Repairs and fixtures

Disposals, faucets, traps, supply lines and dishwasher connections replaced as needed, with what it costs given to you before we start.

Where we work

Kitchens we work in across the Emerald Coast

We work in kitchens from Freeport and Point Washington out to Santa Rosa Beach, Seagrove Beach, Seaside, WaterColor and Inlet Beach. Rental kitchens along 30A take punishment that a family kitchen never does. A different set of guests every week, none of them especially careful about what goes down the drain, and a changeover schedule that means a backed up sink on a Saturday afternoon is a genuine emergency rather than an inconvenience.

Inland through DeFuniak Springs, Paxton and Ponce de Leon, and out to Vernon, Ebro and Caryville, we see more original cast iron drain line under older homes, where a repeat kitchen clog is often the pipe rather than what went into it. West in Niceville, Valparaiso, Destin and Miramar Beach, condo and townhouse kitchens bring their own puzzles, mainly shared stacks and tight cabinet access. If you are on a grinder pump, and a lot of the low lying neighborhoods here are, grease matters even more, because grease is on the utility’s prohibited list for good reason.

Our regular towns, in no special order: Eglin Air Force Base, Vernon, Miramar Beach, Freeport, Caryville, Niceville, Point Washington, Ebro, Destin, Santa Rosa Beach and Valparaiso. Anything else inside our range is on the service area page.

Questions

Questions we get about this

Why does my kitchen sink clog again a month after it is cleared?

Because whatever cleared it made a channel through the buildup instead of removing it. The grease layer bonded to the pipe wall is still there, so the opening closes again.

Properly cleaning the line means cutting that layer off the wall. If it keeps coming back even after that, the pipe itself is worth a camera look.

Are chemical drain cleaners a problem?

They are hard on older pipe, especially cast iron and aged plastic, and they rarely solve a grease clog anyway. They also make the line genuinely unpleasant for whoever opens it next. Better to call before pouring one, not after.

Is a garbage disposal bad for my drains?

Not bad, but not a license either. A disposal handles scraps well and grease badly, and it cannot change what happens to fine particles in a greasy line. Grease belongs in a can in the trash, and that is doubly true if you are on a grinder pump.

My dishwasher leaves water in the bottom. Is that a plumbing issue?

Often yes. The dishwasher drains into the kitchen line, so a partial clog in that branch or a blocked disposal inlet leaves water standing. It can also be the drain hose routing or an air gap. We will sort out which it is.

Can you plumb a kitchen remodel?

Yes. Relocating a sink, adding an island with a drain, running a new icemaker line, changing supply and drain positions for new cabinets. Coordinate with us early, because moving a drain in a slab foundation is a very different job than moving one over a crawl space.

What causes the smell under my sink?

Usually a dry or siphoned trap letting sewer gas back through, and behind that there is often a venting issue. Sometimes it is buildup in the disposal or a slow leak into the cabinet. All three are findable, and none of them are solved by cleaning the basin.
