Finding the Fault Instead of Guessing at Parts

Diagnostics is a different job from repair. A repair call has an obvious broken thing. A diagnostic call is what you need when the fault is intermittent, when three companies have already replaced parts without fixing it, or when the system technically runs but never performs the way it should. The symptom is real and the cause is not obvious, so the work is measurement rather than replacement.
The method is straightforward: a system in normal operation produces predictable numbers, and a system in trouble produces numbers that deviate in patterns. Temperature split across the coil, static pressure across the air handler, refrigerant pressures against the conditions that day, voltage and amperage on every motor, superheat and subcooling. Read enough of those together and the fault stops being a mystery.
This matters financially because parts swapping is expensive and often wrong. A weak temperature split can be low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or restricted airflow, and those three have completely different fixes. Guess wrong and you have paid for a part you did not need while the actual problem sits there untouched. That pattern is a large part of why this company was started.
Problems That Need Real Diagnosis

Why Some Faults Hide
Heat sensitive failures are the classic intermittent. Electrical components change behavior with temperature, so a marginal capacitor, a corroded connection, or a control board with a failing solder joint will work perfectly in the cool of the morning and fail at four in the afternoon. By the time a truck arrives the system is running fine again, which is exactly why these get misdiagnosed. Testing under load and at temperature is the only way to catch them honestly.
Airflow problems disguise themselves as refrigerant problems constantly. If air cannot move across the coil in adequate volume, the coil gets too cold, pressures read low, and the system looks underchanged to anyone reading gauges alone. Add refrigerant to a system that actually has an airflow restriction and you have overcharged it, which creates new problems on top of the original one. Static pressure measurement is what separates the two, and it is the reading most often skipped.
Then there are the local complications. Salt air near the Gulf causes pinhole leaks in condenser coils, and a slow leak produces a system that works acceptably in June and cannot keep up by August, which reads as intermittent to the homeowner. Duct systems in hot attics leak conditioned air where nobody can see it. And a condensate float switch doing its job will shut a system down repeatedly with no equipment fault present at all, which is a diagnosis worth confirming before anybody opens a refrigerant circuit.

The Diagnostic Method
- Build the history
When it fails, what conditions, what has already been replaced, and by whom. Intermittent faults get solved by pattern as much as by meter, and you have the pattern.
- Measure the air side
Static pressure across the air handler and temperature split across the coil. This is where a distribution problem gets separated from an equipment problem before any gauges come out.
- Read the refrigerant circuit
Suction and liquid pressures, superheat and subcooling, evaluated against actual outdoor conditions rather than a remembered rule of thumb.
- Test electrical under load
Voltage, amperage, capacitor values, and connection integrity measured while the system is working and hot, which is when marginal components actually reveal themselves.
- Inspect the physical system
Coils, drain and float switch, duct runs, returns, and the outdoor unit’s condition, including corrosion on coastal installations.
- Report the actual finding
You get the numbers, what they mean in plain language, and what repair those numbers point to. If we cannot prove a cause, we say that rather than inventing one.

Why do I need a diagnostic instead of just a repair?
If the broken part is obvious, you do not. A diagnostic is for problems that are intermittent, that have survived previous repairs, or where the system runs but performs badly. Those need measurement to solve, because the symptom points at several possible causes.
My system works fine when the technician arrives. What can you do?
Test it under stress rather than at rest. Heat sensitive electrical faults show up as marginal readings even when the system is currently running, so a capacitor measuring below spec or a connection reading hot tells us the story even though nothing is failing at that moment.
Another company replaced parts and it still does not work. Now what?
